Interesting information about Color Formation Theory: It was this same problem that had confuded all those who had studied light and color before Newton. Until Newton's theories on color became known, the theories of Aristotle had formed the common scientific wisdom. Aristotle, too, identified seven colors - white, yellow, red, purple, green, blue, and black. From these, all other colors could be made by adding either black or white to the remaining five. In II Libro dell'Arte Cennino encapsulated the artistic practices of the time. he agreed with Aristotle and took the first steps toward devising a system for painting color based on color saturation, by adding varying amounts of white to a hue. In his treatise on painting, De Pictura agreed in principle with the Aristotelian notion that all colors could be made froma few but was more cautions.
